This past summer my husband, Reis, and I traveled to Guyana for his uncle’s wedding. It was my first time visiting the continent of South America and his first time returning in over 27 years. It was like that for much of the family— it was the perfect timing for a homecoming. We visited the family’s ancestral home. Built by Reis’ great-grandfather, it was where his grandmother would eventually grow up and give birth to three of five children before moving to America, and it is where his great-aunt now lives with her family. How beautiful was it for the family to visit with a hand-drawn “Welcome Home” sign taped to the door, no doubt, thanks to the yute dem of the house. These photos were taken in a single afternoon as we explored the neighborhood, shot on 35mm KP400 film
